Let the punditry begin

I shouldn't be surprised. Yet here I am. Dumbfounded.

The coaches have moved Georgia to No. 2 in their Week-2 poll, which means the talking heads at ESPN and all round the country won't be far behind. I know it was hot and I had been drinking, but wasn't that Georgia I saw on Saturday thrashing Georgia Southern 45-21?

Don't get me wrong. I can respect the fact that some people believe USC is a better team than Georgia. In fact, I'm not so sure I don't believe it at this point. But what really sends me hurtling towards a rage-induced coma is the fact that the people who voted USC number one this week voted for Georgia last week. Did someone forget their meds?

All Georgia did was go out and beat the team they were playing like a St. Paul protestor. Sure, GSU scored a couple of touchdowns when the Bulldogs' defensive starters were already on their third Jack and Coke at The Ritz.

Newsflash: MARK RICHT DOESN'T RUN UP THE SCORE.

Most of these coaches probably glanced at the score on the ESPN crawl and came to the half-baked assumption that the Eagles were actually in this game at some point.

My point is that something needs to be done about the way polls are conducted. If you think USC is better than Georgia, that's fine. Like I said, I'm somewhat inclined to agree, although I'm still not convinced. Regardless, nothing this weekend proved USC is better than Georgia. So, Mark Sanchez went to Charlottesville and beat the hell out of Virginia. Pounding an ACC bottom-feeder is hardly world-changing.

Remember voters, Richt isn't Spurrier. He isn't Urban Meyer. He isn't going to hang 74 points on the Our Lady of Mercy Sacrificial Lambs just to soothe his ego. Dear God, I hope the Bulldogs don't let Central Michigan score a touchdown. Mark May and Lou Holthz might have them booted out of the top-25 completely.

no poll till middle of the year is the only way to fix it man
but won't happen it makes too much money and stir in the college world
the only real problem i have is why vote us preseason number 1 then have all of espn and their media friends hate on us from here on out
i wonder if this is the shortest stint a preseason team has been number 1 while winning week 1 but 24 pts or whatever the margin was
who cares, maybe this will relieve some of the pressure and hating we have got so far

Let's get this straight, as long as we're 1 or 2, we play for the championship. That's all we need be concerned about. Hell, its better to be number 2 cuz if you loose you were supposed to. Georgia is not better than USC right now. We have too many line questions thanks to our friend lady luck biting us in the rump with injuries. However, we have one of the best coaches, who is with out a doubt the classiest coach in the sec and probably all of football, and with him, we shall overcome.

There ain't nothing finer in the land, then a drunk obnoxious georgia fan. GO DAWGS!

Someone told me I was a doctor said...

Not surprised, and this move can actually be justified more than last years disaster of "we changed our mind, you didn't deserve to be ranked as high as we ranked you"

Virtually the entirety of the coaches poll have Georgia and USC alternating at 1 and 2, and there was really no basis other than preseason hype to determine where to put them. So the best way to judge is by which team was able to make a statement in week one. Obviously, like you said, Mark Richt is not going to make a statement against Georgia Southern, a school that has the same recruiting pool as him (yet does not directly compete) and thus likely has players that played for coaches he is trying to make connections with. He wants to stay classy, in addition to the fact that he is classy. So by USC making a statement and UGA deciding to hold theirs off until later, that was enough to swing one or two voters opinion, and I feel that it's justified. It wasn't Georgia dropping to number four because Ohio State and Florida demolished their inferior opponent, which would have been absurd. It's a long season, and I believe both teams will end up flip flopping on top many more times.

Also, the national media is begging for a 1 vs. 2 matchup against Ohio State, so don't be surprised when Georgia drops again next week. All that's going to do is add motivation.
